Many people do not realise that their locks are weak or outdated: basic locks, standard cylinders without pull protection, no security hardware, or a latch bolt that can be pushed back too easily. This can make entering a home much easier than expected.

How do burglars break in?

Most burglaries are not random. Burglars look for the weakest points. These are common methods they use to enter a home:

Drilling the cylinder

Drilling a standard cylinder destroys its pins. A security cylinder with drill protection helps prevent this.

Carding or slipping the latch

A latch bolt can be pushed back when the door has not been locked with the key. Fully locking the door helps prevent this.

Snapping the cylinder

A protruding cylinder can be gripped and broken. A correctly sized cylinder and security hardware help prevent this.

Prying the door open

Forcing a door open with a crowbar.

Cylinder pulling

The cylinder core is forcibly pulled out. Anti-pull security hardware and an SKG*** cylinder help prevent this.

Tilted window

A narrow tool may be used to operate the window handle.

Climbing to an upper floor

Access via a balcony, drainpipe or flat roof to poorly visible windows. Lock upper-floor windows and install outdoor lighting.

Lock bumping

A bump key briefly aligns the pins. An anti-bump security cylinder and a controlled key system reduce this risk.
